In simple terms
A burst of stress can help you deal with a real demand. If the alarm never ends, sleep, memory, and flexible thinking often get worse. That pattern is common. It is not a lab result about you personally.
Scientific explanation
Appraisal systems recruit autonomic and neuroendocrine output. Prefrontal control can be less available; habit and threat circuitry can weigh more in experimental models. Timing matters for memory: arousal can stamp some events and scramble working memory for others.
Psychology perspective
Under load, people often prefer immediate relief and familiar options. That is not stupidity. It is a shift in what the control system can afford.
