Why do we get anxious?
We get anxious when the mind forecasts threat — social, bodily, or evaluative — and the body prepares. The word names an experience. It does not automatically name a disorder. Checking, avoiding, and rehearsing can reduce uncertainty now and preserve the forecast later.

Definition
Future-oriented apprehension with cognitive, physiological, and behavioral parts.
Anxiety often pairs a threat forecast with arousal and a move that reduces uncertainty now. That move can be the teacher. MIND does not treat anxiety. It can explain mechanisms and suggest tiny experiments. Care, medication, and diagnosis are clinical acts.
In simple terms
Your system thinks something bad might happen and gets the body ready. Sometimes that is accurate. Sometimes the getting-ready is the whole show.
Scientific explanation
Defensive circuits, interoception, and prefrontal control under stress are the neuroscience vocabulary. Psychology adds avoidance and worry as learning. Sleep loss makes the whole apparatus cheaper to trigger.
What research shows
Stress-control reviews; emotion circuits; sleep and affect; CBT efficacy in trials for many problems — not a personal plan.
What the research does not prove
Your diagnosis. Your cortisol. That this site is treating you.
What remains uncertain
Medical causes of anxiety-like states exist. Assessment belongs with a clinician when impairment is significant.
Practical implications
Notice the two-minute safety behavior. Protect sleep. Seek care when life shrinks or panic is unexplained.
