Stress and memory
Stress can sharpen some responses and impair flexible control. Memory effects depend on timing: arousal can stamp some events and scramble working memory for others. Reviews of stress mediators and of prefrontal stress signalling support those group-level claims. They do not measure your cortisol or destroy-your-hippocampus slogans.

In simple terms
A burst of stress can make some moments stick and make planning harder. Ongoing stress plus poor sleep is a common everyday version. That is not a scan of your brain.

McEwen: mediators adaptive acutely, costly if chronic. Arnsten: stress signalling can weaken prefrontal control in models. Working memory is the workspace that rumination also occupies. Sleep restriction adds a second hit.
What research shows
Converging reviews, mostly high evidence strength in the library, with animal-to-human limits on the circuit paper.
What the research does not prove
Permanent single-fate anatomy claims. A personal diagnosis. That every forgotten name is “cortisol.”
What remains uncertain
Which everyday forgetfulness is encoding, retrieval, sleep, mood, or medication cannot be sorted from text.
Practical implications
Protect sleep. Reduce late evaluative load. Seek medical or psychological care when memory change is sudden, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms.
