Memory
Memory is not one filing cabinet. Working memory holds what you are doing now. Episodic memory stores events. Semantic memory stores facts. Emotion and stress change what is prioritized. Insight cannot delete a person from memory; it can change rehearsal and meaning.

Definition
Encoding, storage, and retrieval across working, episodic, semantic, and procedural systems.
Painful social events stay available because they were important, unfinished, or rehearsed — not because a memory is a file that a website can erase. Sleep supports consolidation. Stress can stamp some events and scramble working memory for others.
In simple terms
You have a small mental workspace and larger long-term stores. What you replay stays easy to retrieve. Sleep helps some of that settling. Stress changes the priority list.

Baddeley’s working-memory framework treats the workspace as limited and multi-component — central to thought and control. Walker’s review links sleep to memory and affective processing. Timing of stress relative to encoding matters; it is not a single “stress ruins memory” rule.
Psychology perspective
Rumination is a use of attention that keeps material in working memory. That is one reason “just forget it” fails.
Neuroscience perspective
Consolidation and affective tagging are group-level findings. Reconsolidation is a real research topic and an easy place for self-help to overclaim.
What research shows
Working memory is capacity-limited. Sleep restriction impairs cognitive and emotional functions in reviewed literature.
What the research does not prove
You cannot infer a reader’s hippocampal volume, nor promise erasure or a 21-day rewrite.
What remains uncertain
Which everyday forgetting is encoding failure, retrieval failure, sleep loss, or interference is often unclear without assessment.
Practical implications
Protect sleep before inventing a memory disorder. Reduce late rehearsal of evaluative material. Use writing to offload the workspace rather than to ruminate.

Questions
Can I erase someone from memory?
No responsible system will promise that. You can change rehearsal, meaning, and what the memory is allowed to decide.
Why do I remember embarrassing moments so clearly?
Arousal and social evaluation are high-priority cues. Replay then keeps them available. That is importance plus practice, not proof of a defect.
