Attention
Attention is the set of processes that select some information for deeper work. Salient, novel, and reward-predictive cues often win, especially when sleep and control are taxed. Difficulty focusing has many contributors; this site will not diagnose ADHD.

Definition
Selection of information for working memory and action, under competition from salience and predicted reward.
Feeds are engineered for capture. Holding a delayed academic reward against a variable social reward is expensive work. Reduce cues before demanding more virtue.
In simple terms
Your focus is a crowded room. Bright, new, or maybe-rewarding things shout. When you are tired, the shouting is cheaper than the plan.
Scientific explanation
Working memory is limited, so selection is mandatory. Stress signalling can impair prefrontal control in models, making capture more likely. Sleep loss impairs cognition and affect.
Psychology perspective
Avoidance and checking also steal attention: they feel like solving uncertainty. That is a learning problem as much as a “focus” problem.
Neuroscience perspective
Control is metabolically and computationally costly. Neuromodulators change gain. None of that is readable from a chat log.
What research shows
Limited working memory, stress-control interactions, and sleep-cognition links are well reviewed. They explain vulnerability, not a personal diagnosis.
What the research does not prove
This page is not an ADHD assessment. Many medical, psychiatric, and situational causes of inattention exist.
What remains uncertain
How much of everyday “I can’t focus” is environment versus trait versus sleep is an empirical question for that person, not a webpage.
Practical implications
Make the first ten seconds of the task easier than the competing cue. Protect sleep. Treat phone proximity as a design problem.

Finding. Stress signalling can weaken prefrontal control and bias toward more habitual or amygdala-weighted responding in models.
