Why do we procrastinate?
We procrastinate when an action’s cost is high now and its reward is delayed, while an alternative (scrolling, tidying, planning) pays immediately. That is learning plus valuation, not a moral verdict. Stress and tired control make the immediate option even cheaper.

Definition
Putting off a valued action in favor of something that reduces discomfort or supplies a quicker payoff.
Task initiation is an effort-and-threat problem as much as a time problem. High standards raise the cost of starting. Avoidance of evaluation is a reinforcer. The phone is a variable-ratio machine sitting on the desk.
In simple terms
The task feels heavy. Something else feels lighter in the next thirty seconds. Your nervous system picks lighter. Then it learns to pick lighter again.
Scientific explanation
Reward prediction and incentive salience explain cue-driven pulling toward the easy option. Habits explain why the same context (desk, evening, laptop) triggers the same delay. Stress reviews suggest prefrontal control is more expensive under load.
Psychology perspective
Behavioral: what is being reinforced in the first two minutes? Cognitive: what catastrophe is starting supposed to risk?
Neuroscience perspective
Not “low dopamine.” Wanting and prediction-error systems, plus taxed control, plus sleep debt.

What the research does not prove
That you have a disorder, or that a detox protocol was measured in you.
What remains uncertain
How much of a given person’s delay is ADHD, depression, sleep, or skill is a clinical question when impairment is large.
Practical implications
Make the first unit smaller than your pride wants. Change the cue (phone in another room). Pair start with a two-minute completion. This is education, not a treatment plan.

Is procrastination laziness?
Laziness is a moral nickname. The mechanism is usually cost now versus payoff later, plus a competing immediate reinforcer.
Does dopamine cause procrastination?
Dopamine research is about prediction and wanting, not a lab value that proves you procrastinate. Cues can pull. That is not a diagnosis.
