Why do we lose motivation?
We lose motivation when the computation changes: more effort, less expected value, longer delay, worse sleep, thinner meaning, or a mood that taxes initiation. That can look like a character change overnight. It is often state plus learning. Sometimes it is medical. A website cannot tell those apart.

Definition
A drop in the initiation or persistence of action toward a previously valued goal.
High standards raise start cost. Depression, anemia, thyroid disease, and sleep disorders can look like “laziness.” This page stays educational and sends impairing change to a clinician.
In simple terms
The task got heavier or the prize got farther or you got more tired. Wanting can stay while starting dies.
Scientific explanation
Incentive salience can still make cues pull (you want to want). Effort and delay discount the goal. Sleep reviews show next-day control and affect suffer with restriction. Habit context may be broken (vacation, burnout).

What remains uncertain
When a motivation collapse is a major depressive episode is a clinical judgment.
Practical implications
