A method, not a vibe
Systematic reviews
A systematic review tries to find and appraise relevant studies with an explicit method. Several MIND library items are reviews of this kind: dopamine and reward, stress and prefrontal function, sleep and affect, habit, stress mediators, emotion circuits, working memory. They are teaching sources with stated limitations — often animal-to-human translation.

Definition
A structured survey of a literature, ideally with transparent search and inclusion rules.
Not every paper labeled “review” is equally systematic. We show study type as recorded in the seed library rather than inflating the term.
In simple terms
Someone read a field on purpose and wrote down what holds. We tell you where that summary cannot go.
Scientific explanation
Reviews can be narrative or more protocol-driven. Animal-heavy circuit reviews are invaluable and easy to misuse in self-help.
What research shows
The listed reviews support mechanism-level statements in their domains, with the limitations on each card.
What the research does not prove
A personal biomarker. A 21-day rewrite. A diagnosis.
What remains uncertain
Where newer primary studies have moved a review’s conclusion — we date pages when we re-read, not to look fresh.
Practical implications
Read the limitation line on every source. That line is part of the science.
Educational only — not a diagnosis, not a treatment plan, not a crisis service.

Why cite animal work?
Because some of the strongest circuit evidence is not from human conversation. We label the population and we do not pretend it is your anatomy.

What is the role of dopamine in reward: hedonic impact, reward learning, or incentive salience? (1998)

Stress signalling pathways that impair prefrontal cortex structure and function (2009)

Finding. Stress signalling can weaken prefrontal control and bias toward more habitual or amygdala-weighted responding in models.
Limitation. Mechanistic detail is stronger in animals; do not infer a reader's anatomy.

The role of sleep in cognition and emotion (2009)

Finding. Sleep supports memory and affective processing; deprivation impairs these functions.
